Folding the whites with Bryan Bangerter and The Whole Shebang

San Diego-based indie folk-collective Bryan Bangerter and The Whole Shebang pumps out a unique blend of reggae, jazz and folk-infused songs about rebel brides and 17th century prostitutes.  The band's creative nucleus is lead by Bryan Bangerter, who gathered together his college buddies to play his unique repertoire of music.

We caught up with Bryan and the band who released their self-titled EP around October 2010.

Here is what they had to say...

ISR: So how did you arrive at the band name?
Bryan: When the band began playing together in 2008 and all ten members were summoned it was easy to see that there was a diverse range of tastes and styles all being brought into the same place. In seeing how eclectic we were The Whole Shebang seemed fitting.

ISR: “Stare Into The Sun” is a song off of your latest album.  What was the story behind that song?  The line “If you stare into the sun into the sun they're sure to leave” Who are you referring to in that line?
Bryan: It's about being wounded when you get to courageous. Sometimes when you're bold there are consequences and people turn on you.

ISR: I counted eight of you in the laundromat photo. You’re all from the same school and seem to add something unique to the collective.  There is a contemporary jazz piece “Happened to Us All” and then there are more traditional rock pop songs with some reggae rants like “Wearing Their Whites.”
Do you think that genre-jumping brings you a potentially larger audience?

Bryan: There's ten people on the record. Knowing that I'd have players from all sorts of musical backgrounds jumping genres seemed like a viable option. There are people who gravitate towards certain songs. People who like jazz like our jazz song, pop lovers like the pop stuff etc.

Doug: The material is really varied and allows me to try a lot of different things. I think working with musicians that are used to playing in a lot of different styles, who are use to working as accompanist and sideman, they've had a lot of experience with different styles and so they're able to bring that to each song we encounter.

ISR: Who are largest influences for your musical compositions?

Bryan: The Beatles, Steely Dan, Stevie Wonder, Wilco etc.

ISR: What are your touring plans for the band? Any plans to come to the east coast? Or perhaps tour the country?
Bryan: Currently The Whole Shebang can't be taken far because we can't afford traveling expenses. Unless everyone wants to quit their jobs and live in a van together I'll probably be stuck traveling alone for now.

ISR: Have any record companies approached you?
Band: We've had one offer and never heard back. Does that count as an offer?

ISR: What is the sixth song on your iPod/music player?
Bryan: "Senorita" - Justin Timberlake
Meg: "If Your Girl Only Knew" - Aaliyah

ISR: What do you guys do for exercise?
Vanessa: I need that dancing outlet, that's why I do hip hop.

ISR: Will there be a followup to The Whole Shebang EP?
Band: There's a lot of unrecorded material written for the project so who knows. Currently Meg and I have plans to do a record together which will use some of the same musicians from The Whole Shebang.
